Philosophy of Experiential Design & Immersive Storytelling

After seeing over a thousand immersive stories over the past 12 years of producing the Voices of VR podcast, host Kent Bye will be exploring the underlying patterns of what makes an XR piece immersive, experiential, participatory, and awe-inspiring.

Both XR and AI are emerging technologies that are providing embodied metaphors for a new paradigm of computing, and Kent will be exploring the underlying philosophical foundations to better understand the dynamics of processes, relationships, consciousness, and experience itself. This talk will be an intersection of theory meeting practice as he recounts some of the best immersive stories over the past decade, and provides an interdisciplinary framework for understanding the unique contribution and affordances of each design discipline.

Since May 2014, Kent Bye has published over 1700 Voices of VR podcast interviews featuring the pioneering artists, storytellers, and technologists driving the resurgence of virtual and augmented reality.

He's an oral historian, experiential journalist, and aspiring philosopher, helping to define the patterns of immersive storytelling, experiential design, ethical frameworks, and the ultimate potential of XR.
