FLY TO YOU

"Saet-byeol, it's me, Kang Song-jeol, your younger sister. When will we meet again?"

The Korean War erupted on June 25, 1950, leading to the separation of approximately ten million families on the Korean Peninsula. Kang Song-jeol left her hometown of Sinpo, North Korea, at the age of 11, leaving behind her 12-year-old sister, Saet-byeol. Her grandfather promised they would return in three months, but that promise has remained unfulfilled for seven decades, blocked by the barbed wire dividing North and South Korea.

Seventy years have passed without news of each other. The beloved homeland and memories have faded, but the longing for each other remains. Song-jeol sends a letter to Saet-byeol, calling out to her in the hopes that it will reach its destination. Will the letter find its way to Saet-byeol, bridging the decades of separation?

The immersive documentary presents the history of separation as both a personal and collective narrative. It focuses on the fragmented memories of Kang Song-jeol, a real individual, to illustrate the human cost of the division between North and South Korea. Through her story, it sheds light on how individuals have been impacted and how they continue to navigate the division's lingering effects.

Using point cloud technology, Fly To You visualizes these personal stories, merging them with NeRF technology to evoke the spaces beyond the barbed wire fences dividing the two Koreas, bridging the gap between past memories and the ongoing reality of division.
